Stress Less, Work Better: Mindfulness and Movement for Your Mental Well-being

As we get closer to the end of the year, things can get pretty busy. Deadlines start piling up, and the holiday season is just around the corner. It is a time when we all might feel a little more pressure than usual.

If you are feeling stressed, you are definitely not alone. In fact, a recent report showed that 52% of workers in the U.S. and Canada feel stressed at work “a lot of the day.” That is more than half of us! At Aquilla, we know that workplace wellness is on the rise because companies are realizing that happy, healthy employees work better.

The good news is that you don’t need a whole hour at the gym to feel better (though that helps!). You can use simple mindfulness tricks and gentle movements right at your desk to lower your stress and boost your mental health.

What is Mindfulness?

You might hear the word “mindfulness” a lot, but what does it actually mean? According to the experts at the Mayo Clinic, mindfulness is simply focusing on what you are sensing and feeling in the moment—without judging yourself.

It’s about slowing down. Instead of worrying about that email you sent yesterday or the meeting you have tomorrow, you focus on right now. This can help reduce anxiety, improve your sleep, and stop you from feeling burned out.

Simple Exercises You Can Do Anywhere

Here are a few easy ways to practice mindfulness during your workday. You don’t need any special equipment!

  1. Focus on Your Breathing. When things get hectic, take a one-minute break. Sit down, close your eyes, and take a deep breath. Focus only on your breath moving in and out of your body. If a worry pops into your head, just let it go and go back to thinking about your breathing.
  2. Pay Attention to Your Senses. We often rush through the day without noticing anything. Try to use all your senses for a moment.
  • Smell your morning coffee before you drink it.
  • Feel the texture of your keyboard or chair.
  • Listen to the sounds of the office or the birds outside. This grounds you and helps your brain take a break from stress.
  1. The Walking “Meditation”. You don’t have to sit still to be mindful. Find a quiet hallway or a path outside. Walk slowly and focus on how your legs and feet feel with each step. Feel your balance shift. This is a great way to combine mindfulness with a little bit of movement.

Gentle Movements to Clear Your Mind

Moving your body is one of the best ways to clear your head. When you sit for too long, your body gets tight, and your mood can drop.

  • Desk Stretches: Try rolling your shoulders back and forth or gently tilting your head from side to side to release tension in your neck.
  • Take a Stand: If you can, stand up while taking a phone call.
  • Walking Meetings: If you have a meeting with just one or two people, ask if you can walk while you talk. It gets everyone moving and can actually make you more creative!

How We Can Help

At Aquilla, we believe in a “comprehensive approach” to wellness. That means we look at the whole picture—physical health, mental well-being, and stress management.

If you are a corporate leader, remember that your involvement matters. When employees see their leaders taking care of their health, they feel encouraged to do the same. Simple changes, like encouraging breaks or bringing in onsite fitness management, can make a huge difference.
